Power2EMC - Intelligent, EMC-Compliant and Energy Efficient Control of Power Electronic Systems

Management and coordination

Power2EMC – Reduce Emissions in Electric Vehicles through Active Filters and Active Gate Drivers

19th June 2026
Power electronic systems, such as drive inverters, on-board chargers, and DC/DC converters, together with batteries, form the heart of electric vehicles. New semiconductors increase the attractiveness of electric vehicles (EVs) due to lower losses, but also generate higher electromagnetic interference (EMI) due to faster switching speeds. At the same time, components are interference-sensitive, especially in highly automated vehicles. Currently, this conflict of objectives can only be resolved by using increasingly heavy and bulky EMI countermeasures. The goal of this project is to significantly reduce the weight, installation space, and ultimately the costs of EMI countermeasures in EVs, while also increasing efficiency. This is to be achieved through two innovative measures. Firstly, adaptively adjusted, active gate drivers will to intervene directly at the source of interference. Secondly, remaining residual interference is to be eliminated through active filters with adaptively synthesized compensation signals.

Power2EMC – Reduce Emissions in Electric Vehicles through Active Filters and Active Gate Drivers

26th June 2026

Power2EMC – empowering Electro-Magnetic-Compliance in vehicles –successfully reduces filters by up to 50% in the DCDC-Converter, the On Board-Charger and the Drive-Inverter.

Within Power2EMC – one project of the NovoMotive project-family – we have tested and elaborated concepts to turn down the electromagnetic noise:

  • Active filtering – Active electric-noise cancellation by compensation – with a variety of compensation algorithms
  • Gate Driver concepts – efficient and well-adapted drivers for the Power-Semiconductors
  • Magnetics reduction concepts to low-volume - ferrite-based - hybrid - filters

It performs on all three components, the DCDC-Converter, the On-Board-Charger, the Drive-Inverter, and as well on the vehicle-like common demonstrator.

The results show: Best concept in the triangle of safety, costs and volume is the Power2EMC hybrid filter approach with active filters, a small passive pre-filter and well-adjusted gate drivers. This brings the electromagnetic noise down to OEM requirements including the following benefits:

  • Filter volume in car is reduced by about ~50% ⚡
  • Magnetics for filters are reduced by >50% ⚡
  • Powers independence of rare earth materials ⚡
  • shielded wiring no more needed ⚡
  • Cost-reduction on filter-level and system-level ⚡
